Expanding Reproductive Choice and Condom
and Oral Contraceptive Use In the Philippines

November 1, 1999 - May 31, 2001


Objective

  1. Provide couples with a broader range of reproductive choices with regards to contraceptives and information regarding contraceptives
  2. Improve the level of general knowledge of pharmacy personnel about contraception and social marketing by training at least 400 pharmacists and 800 clerks over a period of 12 months
  3. Improve the specific knowledge of pharmacy personnel about condoms and oral contraceptives
  4. Improve the level of specific knowledge of pharmacy personnel about the use of combined oral contraceptives as EC
  5. Improve basic interpersonal and counseling skills of pharmacy personnel in the areas of reproductive choice and FP
  6. Encourage pharmacists to stock condoms and oral contraceptives
  7. Encourage consumers to seek contraceptive information and supplies from trained pharmacy personnel and outlets
  8. Encourage agencies and providers of FP, RH and social services to refer potential clients to participating pharmacy outlets for contraceptive information and supplies
  9. Develop mechanism of referral in the target areas including linkages with existing telephone hotline services and other avenues for channeling clientele to collaborating pharmacies
  10. Improve specific knowledge of NGO personnel about EC contraception, particularly this operating hotline services
  11. Develop and pre-test training curricula and materials tailored to the knowledge and educational levels of community pharmacist and clerks
  12. Develop , pretest and disseminate support materials that provide information about EC and service locations

Outputs

Training

  1. Developed, pre-tested and modified the following:
    1. Training of trainers (TOT) manual for pharmacists
    2. TOT manual for pharmacy assistants
    3. Participants handbook for pharmacists
    4. Participants handbook for pharmacy assistants
  2. Trained 21 pharmacists in a TOT workshop from 7 cities.
  3. In collaboration with local chapters of pharmaceutical associations, trained 781/780 (>100%) pharmacists and 1181/1160 (102%) pharmacy personnel
  4. Trained 71 community outreach workers of 11 NGOs in 8 urban sites
  5. Trained 42 NGO clinic personnel to act as referral points
  6. 5173 clients were reached with RH/FP messages including emergency contraception
  7. 737 pharmacy outlets collaborated in marketing ECPs, condoms and oral contraceptives

Monitoring

  1. Updates provided to 404/420 (96.2%) pharmacist and 349/420 (83.1%) pharmacy assistants
  2. Developed and distributed the following materials to previously trained pharmacist and pharmacy personnel:
